The fortress of Herodium, atop an ancient artificial hill outside Bethlehem, made headlines worldwide recently with the discovery of the long-sought tomb of Herod the Great.
A tour of the site takes in a view of the tomb, the massive towers of Herod's fortress-palace, courtyards, a bathhouse, a synagogue built by Jewish rebels during the Great Revolt and the network of tunnels built by the Jewish fighters. Visits must be coordinated in advance.
